Here is another example of how ORRs and DPDs transparency inform the current crisis level animal issues in our City. This interactive map shows:
- Dog Bites [reports from DPD open portal data]
- Dog Bite Heat Maps [generated from reports from DPD open portal data]
- Poverty Overlays [based on census block data]
- Zip Code Overlays
- Council District Overlays
This comprehensive study is brought to you by YOUR right, per state law, to make Open Records Requests and our professional cyclist, environmental scientist, and data strategist Charlie Howell. Clearly from these studies, information is power and it should help inform and shape a strategic plan for the City and DAS.

In addition to the interactive dog bite data, we have this analysis of dog bites per square mile. You might be shocked to see what districts are in the top 6.
DOG BITES PER SQUARE MILE BY DISTRICT
6 CHARTS FROM THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS
The Dallas Morning News article came up with 6 charts to explain why Dallas’ stray dog problem is an issue for all of us. click here for a full screen version
Have a concern about the high level of dog bites in your district? Email your City Council and let them know they need to be more proactive about including dog bite data in their strategic plan to address loose dogs and dangerous dogs. Currently, dog bite data is not tracked or assessed in a meaningful manner by Dallas Animal Services.
Don’t know your council district? Look it up here.
This is not an accurate statisic or map. Missing is my bite location and two others. In the seventeen hundred block of winter wood, 75248. From years 2010 to 2016. I have bite report and EMS report to prove. No where on here does it portray our bites by address.
Sorry to tell you this! You are all fine reporters. I’ve been trying to tell you there are problems bigger than you realize. Time for one of you to listen!
My apologies my dog lady, I recognized the names of the reporters from DMN and went with that…. So sorry! I also did not realize this was only Dallas Police records. I thought all bite records were through DAC only. Thank you for clearing that up. I’m as passionate as the next guy about fixing the broken system and when I saw what I thought was another screw up…. Well, I hope you can understand my passion. Sorry that I was chomping at the wrong person!
No problem Nan. We understand your passion to voice issues with the system and to fix the system. If we can help you in anyway, please feel free to reach out.
You are so very kind! Thank you!
Nan Lew
We welcome your comments and your feedback, but you must have us confused with someone else. First, we are not reporters and we have not heard from you before that we are aware of. We are merely citizens trying to get information out in front of the citizens and the City so that the City can improve Dallas Animals Services and our safety and quality of life.
You are correct that your data is not in our maps. These maps are made from DPD data only. Dog bites through 311 or DAS are not included as we have not yet been able to obtain that data yet. If your dog bite was reported through EMS or the hospital, it would not be in this data, it would be in DAS’ dog bite data. DAS does not publish their dog bite report data as does DPD.
The dog bite reporting mechanisms are a part of the broken dog bite records system. This is a known problem and something we have been advocating for with the City, asking them to look at and fix the known dog bite records issues.
I hope that helps explain what our map is showing and what our goal is in sharing the information with the public.
