Quick, imagine your life with your dog out loose and you can’t find them – panic, right? Statistics show that 1 pet in 3 gets lost sometime during its life, and without proper ID, 90% never return home!
April 20-26th is National Pet ID Week so we wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that there are several things you can do to ensure your pet’s safe return home if that should happen.
- Have your pet microchipped. Microchipping is the easiest way to ensure you pet is returned quickly and safely. It really works. Vets and shelters are all equipped and required to scan the dogs and your information will be instantly linked to the dog (if you registered your chip) So this is an important step after getting the chip – REGISTER your chip. It’s easy and can be done online. It takes seconds. Here is a link to HomeAgain – a very popular microchip. We use that on all our rescue dogs and have had great success with it.
- Keep a collar with ID tags on your pet at all times. People are much more likely to stop to try and help a dog with a collar and tags than a dog without. You can get a custom tag engraved on the spot at PetSmart or PetCo. for about $10. They are super affordable – there is no reason not to do this!! Also, HomeAgain provides a tag with their service.
- Don’t say you don’t need to do that because your pet is an inside pet – things happen! Contractors, maids, burglars, disasters, kids, you really never know! It only takes one time.
