Halloween is a big holiday week for dogs to eat naughty toxic things and to accidentally escape and get lost. Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during the week around Halloween.

1. Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets.
- Chocolate and artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs. Candy wrappers are bad news too
2. Don’t leave pets out in the yard on Halloween.
- Halloween is a big noisy action pact holiday that causes pets to get frightened and to get out and become lost.
3. Keep pets confined and away from the door.
- There is a lot of action at the front door. Make sure pets don’t have the opportunity to escape through the trick or treat commotion at the front door
4. IDs, please!
- Incase of an emergency escape, make sure they have proper ID with your contact information. Have your pet microchipped as well.
5. Keep Halloween plants such as pumpkins and corn out of reach.
6. Don’t keep lit pumpkins around pets
7. Don’t dress your pet in a costume unless you know they’ll love it
- Some dogs like to dress up, some dogs don’t. Understand their body language – they will let you know
8. Try on pet costumes before the big night.
- Costumes should fit properly and not hinder your pet’s movement, vision or breathing. Keep on eye on elastics.
9. Keep wires and electric light cords out of reach.
10. Keep your outdoor cats inside several days before and several days after Halloween.
- Keep a special eye on black cats.
