July 4th is a high holiday for lost pets. More house pets are lost on THIS Holiday than any other. Let’s say this again in a different way: LOTS of perfectly responsible pet owners just like you and me lose their pets on this holiday. Add in some potential storms over the next few days and NOW is the time to be aware.
This year the 4th falls on a Friday, so be prepared for fireworks all weekend long. And keep in mind that depending on where you live, holiday shenanigans may have already begun…some lovely was firing off professional grade fireworks in my neighborhood at 6:45 am this morning.
If your dogs don’t like storms – they definitely will not like fireworks! Be ready. In general, don’t take dogs out where there are fireworks – it is not fun for them, EVER.
- MOST IMPORTANT: Collars and tags at all times! This helps Fido get home quickly if an emergency happens. If your dog doesn’t have one, get your dog microchipped- best money you will ever spend!
- Try not to leave your dogs outside where they can become startled and panicked by the loud, disorienting sounds of fireworks.
- Help keep your dog relaxed and safe by providing a safe quiet environment for them.
- Keep your dog in a quiet escape proof place in your house.
- Play music or TV in the house to help drown out the sounds of the fireworks
- When you crate your pets if you are away give them chewies, kongs, or some kind of distracting toy during the loud times
- Check your fence for gaps and loose boards and check the gate latches.
