I saw these two characters crossing 12th street in the rain. They are not car savy dogs and they almost caused an accident ambling across the busy road. I was on my way to an appointment, so they are proof yet again, that I will stop on my way to anywhere to load up any smelly, mangy, dirty, disgusting dog in my car. And that Rotty was all of that and more. Oh that was a special smell.
There was a little shenanigans to get them both in the car. When the Rotty finally decided to come over to check me out, she sniffed me so violently I thought she might inhale me. I’m almost sure she smelt someone she knew on me, and since we were not far from her territory, it was probably Tasha the wild husky.
The Rotty was thinking there was something familiar about me and I kept thinking there was something familiar about both of them, yet I had never seen them before. As I was loading them in the car, it came to me – they looked just like Dr Jacky’s Mississippi business partner’s dogs, Po and Morton. Just like them. Dead ringers. I messaged a picture to Dr. Jacky. Her reaction was the same – it’s Po and Morton reincarnated!
Since there are currently 4 dogs, including a wild husky, at my house, the plan was to take the dogs the city shelter. I was hopeful that the little one had a caring owner, I was not so optimistic about the big one. Taking them to the pound would allow their owners the opportunity to find them. When we finally made it to the check-in desk at the shelter my phone rang, it was Dr. Jacky.
Me: “If you’re not calling to tell me not to turn them in, I’m finally at the check in desk and I’ll have to call you back”
Jacky: “I sent the picture to Kathy, she wants the dogs.”
“Seriously, she wants to adopt them?”
“She thinks it’s karma”
“I knew it!”
At this point the animal control lady went from looking annoyed to looking quite amused.
There was a discussion, while the animal control lady patiently waited, about that we should turn them in so their owners could look for them and then we would spring them after the holding period. No one came for them, so we sprung them.
They were both vet checked, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and spayed or neutered.. The big one is heartworm positive and will be treated, the little one was the right age to be heartworm negative. They are at the Arapaho Road “doggie spa” while they await the transfer to their new forever karmic home in Mississippi. There was talk of separating them as Kathy was really only looking for a Rotty, but as the reports came back that whenever they were separated for a walk or a bath at the clinic, the Rotty would have great fits of despair, it was decided that they should go together. If two dogs that were found hundreds of miles away from their look alike by the bff of the bff of the dog’s owners, then it was karma that they should ALL be reunited. Kathy is taking both of them. After the hand-off and the traditional stop at the casino in Shreveport, they will be on their way to a fabulous new life.
