Oh puppies. They are so cute and cuddly. When children innocently ask, “Where do puppies come from?” We should take a minute to know. This is a video about the FIFTY ONE (51) Maltese puppy mill dogs abandoned out in the country – quite literally dumped in the road. The video says it best in one of the captions, “These are the parents of every dog you buy in a pet store, trade show, or on-line”.
It is also illegal to buy or sell dogs out of the back of a car on a street corner parking lot. Think about these abused Maltese dogs or poor Claire next time you see someone selling puppies on the side of the road. If you are ready for a new pet, please try the shelters first. If you want a particular breed, never forget there are countless local breed rescues.
If you choose to go with a breeder, verify they are an individual breeder that loves and cares for their pets. Insist on seeing their facility. If they will not let you tour the facility, know that you are supporting a puppy mill that cannot let you see their on-sight facilities because they are deplorable. The SCPA has a great article about how to spot a puppy mill.
This video is both heartbreaking and inspiring. To see the dogs’ journeys documented reminds us all that only our choices, our voices, and our love can stand up for those sweet dogs and others like them.
Adopt a dog, report abusive or illegal behaviors, report puppy mills, and support your local rescue groups.
